Andy Warhol Contour Line Shoe Prints
Students will study the work of Andy Warhol and in the process learn the techniques of contour line drawing, printmaking, and composition.
Robert INdiana Color Theory
Almost everyone recognizes Robert Indiana’s “Love” paintings and sculptures, with stacked letters and tilted “O”. Designed in 1965 for a holiday card, it immediately became a pop culture icon. Students will study Robert Indiana and see how pop culture influenced his work. In class students brainstorm their own one word poems and paint them using color theory concepts learned in class.
KImmy Cantrell Clay ASYMMETRICAL faces
Students will study ceramic artist Kimmy Cantrell. Kimmy Cantrell uses asymmetry to challenge traditional definitions of beauty. “I want to show the beauty within flaws,” the artist explains. “Imperfections tell stories that are far more compelling than perfection.” Students will learn the basic hand building techniques of creating a slab, and attaching pieces by scoring and slipping the clay as well as how to create texture in clay.
Dia De Los Muertos plaster Sugar skulls
Students will study the Mexican holiday Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and folk art that is part of the holiday celebrations. They will also compare the holiday to Halloween and look for similarities and differences.Then students will create a plaster casting of their own face and paint it to look like a sugar skull focusing on organic shapes, symmetry, and folk art designs.
